JUST IN: Dozens Feared Dead in Lagos Boat Accident
Tragedy struck on Monday night in Lagos as two passenger boats capsized in the Imore Lagoon, leaving at least 20 people feared dead. The incident, which occurred around 7 p.m., involved two boats, each carrying 16 passengers. Both vessels reportedly collided before sinking.
According to police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, 11 passengers were rescued from the water, though the exact number of casualties remains uncertain as search and rescue operations continue. The rescued victims, many of whom sustained injuries, were rushed to Naval Town Hospital in Ojo for medical treatment.
The boats involved in the accident were unregistered, raising concerns about the safety and regulation of water transport in the area. The incident was first reported at the Ilashe Police Division, and authorities, along with local divers and emergency responders, have been working tirelessly to locate any remaining survivors.
Efforts to reach the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) for further updates were unsuccessful, as calls to the agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Femi Osanyintolu, went unanswered.
