JUST IN: Deadly Explosion on Maiduguri-Damboa Road Kills Seven, Leaves Dozens Injured
An explosion has rocked the Maiduguri-Damboa Road in Borno, claiming the lives of at least seven commuters and injuring several others. The blast, caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), was reportedly planted by Boko Haram terrorists along the dilapidated road that cuts through the Sambisa Forest.
The explosion occurred as a convoy, carrying passengers from Damboa to Maiduguri under military escort, was traveling along the road on Saturday. The blast left several individuals with varying degrees of injuries, though the exact number of the wounded remains unclear. The victims have been transferred to a hospital in Maiduguri for immediate medical care.
The Maiduguri-Damboa Road, which connects Maiduguri to several local government areas in Southern Borno, has long been a hotspot for Boko Haram activity. After years of closure, the road was reopened by Governor Babagana Zulum, allowing travel to areas such as Damboa and Chibok with the protection of a military convoy. The convoy, which runs twice a week, is routinely escorted by the military, who also scan the area for IEDs to ensure safety.
