JUST IN: Chaos Erupts at Maiduguri Protest as Immigration Officer Accidentally Shoots Himself”
A tense scene unfolded in the Bulunkutu area of Maiduguri on Thursday when an immigration officer accidentally discharged his firearm, shooting himself three times in the foot while attempting to block a group of protesters.
The sound of gunfire initially sparked panic among the protesters, who feared one of their own had been shot. However, the crowd calmed upon realizing that the injured party was a member of the security forces.
The incident occurred as a joint patrol team comprising police, military, immigration, DSS, and Civil Defence officers set up barricades at Bulunkutu Railway Junction to prevent the protesters from advancing into Maiduguri’s main city.
The officer, whose identity remains undisclosed, was promptly taken to a nearby hospital. His current condition is not known.
The protests in Maiduguri are part of a broader wave of demonstrations across the country, with citizens expressing frustration over the government’s handling of the ongoing insurgency, corruption, and the high cost of living.
