JUST IN: Bolivian Military Overruns Presidential Palace in Apparent Coup
Soldiers have overrun Bolivia’s presidential palace in what appears to be a coup attempt led by General Juan José Zúñiga. The New York Times reports that the military has mobilized the Bolivian Army, Air Force, and Navy.
General Zúñiga, standing defiantly on the palace steps and flanked by armed forces, declared the military’s control over key government locations, including the capital, La Paz.
President Luis Arce has called on Bolivians to defend democracy, urging citizens to flood the streets in support of his government. Arce warned that the nation’s democratic institutions are under severe threat following the military’s aggressive actions.
