JUST IN: Bandits Attack in Plateau State Leaves Over 40 Dead, Homes Destroyed
Suspected bandits attacked Zurak village in the Bashar District of Wase local government area, Plateau State, resulting in the deaths of more than 40 residents and leaving several others injured. The assailants also set numerous homes ablaze during the violent rampage.
The attack occurred around 7 PM on Monday evening, as the villagers were going about their daily activities. The poor communication network in the area delayed immediate reporting of the incident.
Sahpi’i Sambo, a local youth leader, confirmed the details of the attack, describing how the gunmen arrived on motorcycles, with two riders per bike, and began shooting indiscriminately with sophisticated weapons. “More than 40 people were killed while many others were injured. Residents of the village have fled to neighbouring communities for safety. As of yesterday, security personnel had not yet arrived at the community. It was a deadly attack,” he said.
Hamza, another resident, highlighted the ongoing issues faced by the community due to banditry. He mentioned that the bandits have been targeting a local mining company, using the area as a terrorist camp. Monday night’s attack was reportedly sparked by the villagers’ refusal to pay the bandits’ demanded “tax.”
The confrontation escalated into a violent gun battle, with the bandits threatening to annihilate the villagers. According to Hamza, one resident, Isa Musa, reported that seven people were abducted during the attack, and over 40 were killed.
Efforts to contact the spokespersons of the state police command, DSP Alabo Alfred, and OPSH Major Samson, were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
