JSS, SSS Not Scrapped – Education Minister Clarifies
The Federal Government has not scrapped Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS), contrary to recent media reports, Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa has clarified. Addressing the press on Friday, he stated that his recent proposal on education reform had been misrepresented, emphasizing that the current 6-3-3-4 system remains unchanged.
Dr. Alausa explained that during the 2025 Extraordinary National Council on Education meeting held in Abuja, he proposed a 12-year compulsory education model. However, this was intended as a subject for discussion, not an immediate policy shift. His proposal aims to streamline the transition between JSS and SSS by removing examination barriers, allowing students to progress without external assessments at that stage.
He reassured the public that the Federal Ministry of Education would engage in extensive consultations over the next eight months, seeking input from policymakers, state governments, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders. A final decision on the proposal will be made at the October 2025 National Council on Education meeting.
Dr. Alausa urged Nigerians to disregard claims that JSS and SSS had been scrapped, reaffirming the government’s commitment to policies that enhance access to quality education while aligning with global best practices.
