“Jonathan Will Be on 2027 Ballot” — Coalition
Supporters of former President Goodluck Jonathan have said he will contest the 2027 presidential election, despite no formal declaration from the former leader.
The position was stated by the Coalition for Jonathan during an interview on Arise Television on Friday.
Speaking on behalf of the group, convener Dr. Tom Ohikere said Jonathan’s recent remarks about the presidency should not be interpreted as a rejection of calls for him to return to politics.
According to Ohikere, the former president was only stressing the complexity of running for the country’s highest office.
“Goodluck Jonathan must not be misunderstood by Nigerians when he said it’s not a computer game to run for presidency,” he said.
“He was trying to say that contesting for the presidency is a serious and demanding process.”
Ohikere added that Jonathan is expected to announce his position after consultations.
“He has not yet accepted the proposal from the group seeking his return, but in the next one or two days, he is expected to make his position known,” he said.
The coalition’s comments come a day after Jonathan disclosed that he would consult widely before deciding whether to participate in the 2027 election.
Ohikere, who identified himself as a member of the African Democratic Congress, also appealed for Jonathan’s return to active politics ahead of the next general election.
