Jonathan Camp Divided Over Party Platform for Possible Presidential Run

Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s political camp is grappling with uncertainty over which platform he may adopt should he choose to run for the presidency in 2027.

Close associates say Jonathan’s hesitation to make an official declaration is tied to ongoing consultations about which opposition party would provide the strongest base for his ambition. The options reportedly under consideration are the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he is a founding member, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which recently restructured and counts some of his loyal supporters among its ranks.

Jonathan’s allies appear divided. Some favor a return to the PDP, emphasizing his historical ties and the presence of powerful figures like FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Others lean toward the ADC, where the influence of Dumebi Kachikwu, its 2023 presidential candidate, could play a strategic role. Both parties, however, are struggling with leadership disputes, and analysts believe the resolution of these internal battles may heavily influence Jonathan’s eventual choice.

“There’s optimism in the camp, but also hesitation,” one insider explained, noting that while the ADC offers alignment with many of Jonathan’s associates, the PDP carries the weight of legacy and political structure. For now, those considerations remain at the center of behind-the-scenes discussions.

Political stakeholders, including some former governors and party officials, are said to be working discreetly to build a coalition in anticipation of Jonathan’s possible return. Yet, despite mounting speculation, Jonathan himself has issued no statement and is reportedly taking his time to weigh all options carefully.

As the 2027 race begins to take shape, those close to him insist that any decision will be rooted in strategy and unity, mindful of the shifting dynamics in Nigeria’s political landscape.
