Japa: Germany Launches Online Visa Portal to Attract Skilled Workers from Nigeria, Other Countries
Germany has introduced a new online platform to streamline the visa application process for Nigerians and others aiming to work, study, or reunite with family in the country. This move is part of Germany’s effort to address a growing demand for skilled labor while modernizing its immigration system.
Germany’s Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, expressed optimism about the platform’s potential to meet the country’s workforce needs. Highlighting the urgency of the issue, she noted that Germany faces an annual shortage of at least 400,000 skilled workers across various sectors, including skilled trades, healthcare, and technology.
Baerbock emphasized the need for efficiency, saying that lengthy paper-based applications and extended waiting periods often deter talented individuals from pursuing opportunities in Germany. “At times like these, we need a visa process that is modern, digital, and secure,” she remarked, adding that the platform reflects Germany’s status as a forward-thinking, inclusive country of immigration.
The online portal, accessible globally, allows users to apply for 28 categories of national visas. It serves all 167 German visa offices worldwide, offering a streamlined and user-friendly alternative to traditional methods.
