Japa: Canadian Province Imposes Two-Year Ban on Nigerian, International Students
The Canadian province of British Columbia has taken a bold step by announcing a two-year ban on admitting Nigerians and other international students to tertiary institutions. The decision was revealed by Federal Immigration Minister Marc Miller in a recent statement.
The move, aimed at reducing new student visa issuances by 35 percent for the current year, is part of the province’s effort to combat what Miller describes as “exploitative practices” within the education system. Premier David Eby emphasized the significance of addressing issues within the international education system, recognizing its crucial role in shaping the social and economic landscape of British Columbia.
Eby expressed concern about the varying quality standards across private institutions in the province, regardless of their size. He highlighted that certain institutions are currently falling short of the province’s expectations. This controversial decision is expected to stir discussions about the impact on diversity, education opportunities, and the overall international relations of British Columbia.
