JAMB Officials Stage Walkout During House Committee Session
A brief drama unfolded at the National Assembly on Wednesday when representatives of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) walked out of a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies.
The incident occurred after JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, failed to attend the session and instead delegated a director, Mr. Mufutau Bello, to represent him.
Tension arose when Bello requested that journalists vacate the meeting room, claiming that the documents he intended to present contained sensitive information. However, members of the Committee rejected the request, emphasizing that their proceedings were public and that they held constitutional authority to determine how sittings were conducted.
The disagreement quickly escalated, and in a surprising twist, Bello reportedly became agitated, directed his team to leave, and walked out of the meeting — an action that left lawmakers visibly shocked.
Angered by the walkout, the Committee ordered the Sergeant-at-Arms to arrest the JAMB officials, but they had already exited the premises.
The Committee has now issued a directive for the JAMB Registrar to appear in person before it on Tuesday next week, along with his management team and all required documents. It also warned that failure to comply could result in the issuance of a warrant of arrest.
