It’s Cult Clash: Police Reacts to Nawfia Market Attack, Confirms Four Dead
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that four people were killed in a violent cult-related attack near Afor Market Junction in Nawfia community, Njikoka Local Government Area, on Sunday. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state police spokesman, said the assailants, believed to be members of a rival cult group, arrived in a black Lexus Jeep with an unknown registration number and opened fire indiscriminately on marketgoers before fleeing the scene.
In a statement, Ikenga said, “The violent attack resulted in the death of four persons, after which the assailants fled the scene. Preliminary information obtained at the scene has provided useful leads, and the Command is already acting on them to ensure the perpetrators are tracked down and arrested.” He added that the Special Anti-Cult Squad had previously arrested two suspects and recovered a firearm based on intelligence of a planned confrontation, but despite these efforts, the attack occurred.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as residents ran for safety while gunfire erupted. Video footage circulating online showed lifeless bodies lying on the ground and people fleeing in all directions. Locals expressed shock at the incident and called for increased security presence to prevent further violence.
The police said they remain determined to combat cultism and violent crime in the state. Ikenga assured that investigations are ongoing and promised to provide updates as they progress.
Authorities continue to urge residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security operatives while the perpetrators are pursued.
