Italian Man Filippo Ferlazzo Sentenced to 24 Years in Prison for Beating Nigerian Man to Death
Italian national Filippo Ferlazzo has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for the brutal assault and murder of Nigerian citizen Alika Ogorchukwu. The tragic incident, which unfolded in July 2022, sent shockwaves through the Civitanova Marche coastal city and garnered international attention.
On July 29, 2022, the victim, Alika Ogorchukwu, aged 39 and relying on crutches for mobility, was subjected to a horrifying attack in broad daylight on the main central street of Civitanova Marche, Italy. Ferlazzo, the assailant, mercilessly beat Ogorchukwu to death, using the very crutches the victim depended on for support. Shockingly, numerous onlookers witnessed the vicious assault but failed to intervene, instead opting to capture the gruesome event on their mobile phones.
Following the heinous crime, Ferlazzo was swiftly apprehended by Italian law enforcement on July 30, 2022, and subsequently charged with the murder of Ogorchukwu. Additionally, Ferlazzo faced charges related to the theft of Ogorchukwu’s phone.
The Italian authorities revealed that Ferlazzo’s motive for the attack stemmed from a seemingly minor altercation. It is believed that Ogorchukwu had asked Ferlazzo’s girlfriend to purchase a handkerchief, triggering the violent outburst that resulted in the loss of a life.
Alika Ogorchukwu was declared dead at the scene by paramedics, marking a tragic end to an innocent life.
Reacting to the verdict, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), expressed her satisfaction with the justice served in this case. She commented, “I am glad that this case finally got justice. Like I always say, there has to be consequences for actions.”
Dabiri-Erewa also extended her appreciation to the Nigerian Mission in Rome for their diligent efforts in pursuing justice for Ogorchukwu and other Nigerians involved in legal matters abroad. She urged Nigerians living in the Diaspora to remain law-abiding, excel in their endeavors, and stay connected with their homeland by contributing positively to its development.
