Invictus Obi Removed from US Prison Records, Status Unclear
Obinwanne Okeke, the Nigerian entrepreneur popularly known as Invictus Obi, is no longer listed as being in the custody of the United States Federal Bureau of Prisons as of December 23, 2025.
A check on the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ online inmate locator shows that Okeke’s status now reads, “Not in BOP Custody as of: 12/23/2025.” The update has triggered speculation about a possible release from prison.
Okeke was sentenced in February 2021 to 10 years’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to charges linked to an $11 million internet fraud scheme. Based on the original sentence, he was expected to remain in custody until September 3, 2028.
Details surrounding his removal from BOP custody could not be independently confirmed. It is unclear whether he was released early, granted a sentence reduction, placed on supervised release, or benefited from another form of legal relief. Given that his conviction was for federal offences, a transfer to a state correctional facility is considered unlikely.
The businessman was arrested in 2019 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation at Dulles International Airport while attempting to depart the United States. He was charged in connection with a complex business email compromise scheme that targeted Unatrac Holding Limited, the export sales office for Caterpillar heavy industrial and agricultural equipment.
Investigators said the scheme began in April 2018 after a Unatrac executive fell victim to a phishing email, allowing conspirators to gain access to email login credentials. The attackers then sent fraudulent wire transfer requests backed by fake invoices, leading to losses estimated at more than $11 million.
Before his arrest and conviction, Okeke was widely known as a tech entrepreneur and had been named by Forbes magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential Young Africans. His public image and career, however, suffered a major setback following his prosecution and sentencing in the United States.
