Inspector Killed by Mob in Plateau After Suspect He Arrested Raised False Alarm
A police inspector attached to the Plateau State Police Command has been killed by a mob in Nyakala community, Bassa Local Government Area, after a suspect he arrested falsely accused him of being a motorcycle thief.
The officer, identified as Inspector Lasare Jeremiah of the Criminal Investigation Department, was on duty with colleagues on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, when the incident occurred.
Police spokesperson, DSP Alabo Alfred, confirmed the development, explaining that Jeremiah and other detectives were investigating a petition against Audu Abdullahi, a resident of Kishika Village. The suspect was trailed to Nyakala, where he was intercepted.
In a twist, Abdullahi allegedly raised a false alarm, claiming that the detectives were motorcycle thieves. This triggered residents of the area to attack Jeremiah.
“When the mob realised their mistake, they turned on the suspect as well. Both victims were rushed to Cottage Hospital in Kisalloi, where Inspector Jeremiah died from his injuries. The suspect was later referred to Jos University Teaching Hospital, where he also passed away,” DSP Alfred said.
He disclosed that three suspects have been arrested in connection with the mob action, while investigations are ongoing at the State CID in Jos.
The Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, expressed deep grief over the incident and cautioned residents against taking the law into their own hands.
