INEC Denies Setting March 26 Deadline for Political Appointees to Resign
Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has dismissed a viral graphic circulating on social media that falsely claims the commission fixed March 26 as the deadline for government officials intending to contest elections to resign.
In a statement issued Friday on its official X account, INEC said the message did not originate from the commission and described the graphic as misleading and unverified.
The commission urged the public, media organisations, and political stakeholders to ignore the claim and refrain from sharing the content.
INEC reiterated that all official announcements are released only through its verified communication channels. These include its official website and authorised social media platforms, as well as formal press statements.
According to the commission, Nigerians should confirm election-related information through these channels before sharing it to avoid spreading misinformation.
INEC also reaffirmed its commitment to providing accurate, timely, and transparent information to the public.
