Imo State Assembly Moves to Remove Chief Judge Amid Allegations of Age Falsification
The Imo State House of Assembly has recommended the removal of Chief Judge Theresa Chikeka from her position following allegations of age falsification. The decision was announced by Hon. Ikenna Ihezue, chairman of the ad-hoc committee overseeing the investigation.
According to Hon. Ihezue, Chief Judge Chikeka stands accused of misconduct for allegedly adjusting her date of birth from October 27, 1956, to October 27, 1958. This alteration, the committee asserts, constitutes a serious breach of conduct that cannot be overlooked.
Despite multiple invitations, Chief Judge Chikeka reportedly declined to appear before the committee, a move that has been interpreted as further evidence against her in this case.
Rt. Hon. Clinton Amadi, a member of the ad-hoc committee, emphasized, “Her refusal to cooperate has compounded the allegations against her, underscoring the gravity of the situation.”
The Imo State Assembly has promptly forwarded its findings and recommendations to the National Judicial Council (NJC) for further review and action. Hon. Bernard Ozoemenam, another committee member, expressed confidence in the NJC’s ability to address the matter appropriately.
“Falsification of age is a severe transgression, and the judiciary must uphold the highest standards of integrity,” commented Comrade Ndubuisi Onyemaechi, Director of Investigations for the Civil Society Engagement Platform. He noted that such cases have led to the removal of judges and justices in the past.
The unfolding situation has sparked intense public interest, especially amidst related actions by the Assembly, including the suspension of members allegedly involved in a plot to impeach the Speaker.
