Imo: Bomb Blast Rips Through Market, Leaves Five Dead, Dozens Injured
A deadly bomb explosion tore through Ubeheze market in Awo Idemili, Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State on Tuesday, leaving at least five people feared dead and several others injured. The blast, which occurred around 11 a.m. as traders were opening their shops, sent shockwaves across the community and reduced parts of the market to rubble.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of horror, with lifeless bodies scattered across the area and wounded victims lying in pools of blood. A viral video circulating online captured the aftermath—wailing voices, chaos, and destroyed market stalls. Flying debris from shattered wood, zinc, and other materials marked the scale of the destruction.
One trader who witnessed the explosion recounted: “We opened the market around 11 a.m., and traders were just setting up when the explosion happened. It rocked the entire market. Many were killed, including children.”
Residents expressed deep fear and caution in discussing the incident. One local, speaking anonymously, highlighted the tense atmosphere in the community: “People are afraid to speak. For years, there’s been no regular police presence—only Ebubeagu and the army. Everyone is cautious not to say anything that might endanger their families.”
The Imo State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement. Repeated attempts to reach Police Public Relations Officer Henry Okoye were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or messages. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation as the community reels from the tragic event.
