Immigration Officer Hit by Stray Bullet, Not on Orders of Chinese Firm – Interior Ministry Confirms
The Nigerian Ministry of Interior has confirmed that a Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) officer was struck by a stray bullet, dismissing earlier claims that the shooting was carried out on the orders of a Chinese company.
Babatunde Alao, media adviser to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the findings on Saturday, March 29, following further investigations into the incident. Initially, the minister had accused a Chinese firm of orchestrating the attack and promised strong action. However, Cui Guangzhen, Director General of the Chinese Commerce Chamber in Nigeria, denied any involvement by Chinese entities or nationals, instead attributing the incident to a stray bullet fired by Nigerian police during an attempt to apprehend a suspect accused of stealing iron rods from a Chinese company.
Alao confirmed this explanation, stating that the government had launched a full investigation to uncover the exact circumstances of the shooting. He reassured the public that authorities would hold anyone responsible accountable.
The minister also reiterated his commitment to the safety and professionalism of law enforcement officers. The ministry assured that while the government remains dedicated to protecting security personnel, it also supports law-abiding businesses, both local and foreign.
