Imam Who Protected Christians in Plateau Attack Dies at 90
Abubakar Abdullahi, the Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi, Plateau State, has died at the age of 90. He passed away Thursday night at Plateau Specialist Hospital, Jos, his son, Saleh Abubakar, confirmed.
Saleh said his father had been battling a heart condition and “died ten days after he was admitted. His health had been unstable since the diagnosis.” Imam Abdullahi is survived by 19 children—12 sons and seven daughters.
In June 2018, during violent communal clashes across ten villages in Barkin Ladi, Imam Abdullahi sheltered 262 Christians in his mosque and home, protecting them from attack until the conflict ended. His actions earned him national and international recognition, including the 2019 International Religious Freedom Award from the U.S. Department of State.
Funeral rites for the late Imam are scheduled to take place today after Jumma’at Prayer in Nghar village.
