IGP Condemns Extortion, High-Handedness by Nigeria Police Officers
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has voiced serious concerns over growing allegations of extortion and abuse of power involving members of the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking at a high-level conference in Abuja with Assistant Inspectors-General, Commissioners of Police, and heads of various police formations, the IGP called for immediate action to address these issues. He urged senior officers to enforce stricter supervision and ensure that police personnel across the country adhere to the highest standards of professionalism, especially while performing their duties.
Egbetokun also directed the IGP X-Squad, Monitoring Unit, Complaint Response Unit (CRU), and other disciplinary bodies to intensify routine checks on officers’ conduct. Furthermore, he issued a strong warning to officers using his name to extort money from the public, emphasizing that such acts would not be tolerated under his watch.
