IGP Bans Policemen in Mufti from Carrying Guns
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has ordered that no police operative should carry assault rifles while dressed in civilian attire. He issued this directive during a virtual meeting with senior police officers, emphasizing the need for professionalism and respect for human rights.
Egbetokun expressed concern over reports of human rights violations and warned that any officer found guilty of such misconduct would face serious consequences. He stressed that all tactical squads must adhere to standard operating procedures, including wearing approved uniforms while on duty.
A statement from Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi highlighted the IGP’s stance on unethical conduct, including the improper transfer of cases without written approval. Egbetokun warned that such actions would no longer be tolerated, as they cause unnecessary delays and hardships for those seeking justice.
He urged all police ranks to work together to uphold the integrity of the Force and prevent actions that could damage its reputation.
