“I Weep for Nigeria’s Democracy” – Adamawa Governor Fintiri Laments Edo Election Outcome

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has expressed deep concern over the outcome of the recent Edo State governorship election, stating that he “weeps for Nigeria’s democracy.” His reaction follows the declaration of Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the September 21 poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a statement released on Sunday, Fintiri strongly condemned the conduct of the election, describing the process as a disgrace to the democratic principles Nigeria upholds. He criticized the APC and its leadership for their alleged manipulation and disregard for election laws.

Fintiri specifically called out APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje for arriving in Edo State on election day in a private jet, allegedly in violation of police-enforced movement restrictions. He labeled this act as a “blatant disregard for democratic norms” and part of a larger effort to undermine the integrity of the election.

The Adamawa Governor also pointed to several irregularities during the election, including reports of vote-buying, disruptions during the collation process, and results that appeared to exceed the number of accredited voters. He emphasized that these issues erode public trust in Nigeria’s democratic process.

“I weep for Nigeria’s democracy after witnessing the shameful conduct of the Edo gubernatorial poll,” Fintiri lamented. “The APC’s desperate attempts to discredit me with false claims about announcing results are a distraction from the real issues at hand. The real scandal is the APC’s use of power to intimidate voters and manipulate the system.”

Fintiri urged Nigerians to demand accountability and called on INEC to address widespread concerns of electoral malpractice. “This is not just about Edo; democracy itself is under attack. Nigerians deserve better, and the world is watching,” he concluded.

The Governor’s remarks have added to the growing criticism of the election, with many questioning the transparency and fairness of the process.
