“I Trusted Her to Be Neutral”: Drama in Ondo Court as Woman Accuses Lawyer of Secretly Marrying Her Ex-Husband After Handling Their Divorce Case

Drama erupted this week at the Akure Customary Court when Mrs. Folakemi Adebayo accused her former husband, Emmanuel Oyebanji, and the lawyer who handled their divorce case of betrayal. The emotional courtroom scene unfolded as Folakemi stormed into the session in tears, claiming her ex-husband had secretly married the lawyer shortly after the divorce.

According to a report by Hope Newspaper, a publication owned by the Ondo State Government, Folakemi alleged that the lawyer, who represented her during the proceedings, pretended to be neutral while allegedly engaging in a romantic relationship with Emmanuel. She accused the lawyer of manipulating the divorce settlement to her advantage, saying, “She ruined my settlement! I trusted her to be neutral, not sleeping with my husband!”

Folakemi urged the court to reopen the case and investigate the lawyer for professional misconduct and unethical behaviour, insisting the affair began before the divorce was finalized.

In response, Emmanuel denied all accusations, maintaining that Folakemi had abandoned their home less than a year into the marriage and had completely cut off communication. He explained that his relationship with the lawyer did not begin until after the divorce was finalized, saying, “I only found comfort in someone who understood what I was going through.”

The lawyer, who was present in court, also denied the claims, stating that her involvement with Emmanuel was strictly professional during the divorce process. “There was nothing unethical between us and I am not guilty of any misconduct,” she told the court.

Presiding judge Ireti Sunday, after listening to all parties, ruled that the court could not act on suspicion alone. With no credible evidence presented to support claims of conspiracy or professional misconduct, the case was dismissed.
