“I Smoked Since I Was 13” – Tonto Dikeh Shares Journey of Overcoming Addiction and Anger
Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh has opened up about her personal journey of overcoming long-term struggles with smoking, alcohol, masturbation, and anger during a Sunday service at Streams of Joy International Church. The actress shared her testimony at the New Season Prophetic Prayers and Declarations service, led by Pastor Jerry Eze, in a video posted by DCLImagery on YouTube.
Dikeh revealed that she began smoking at 13 and continued for 27 years, citing early exposure at home as a factor in developing the habit. She described how she had battled alcohol use and sexual struggles since childhood and credited her transformation to divine intervention. “God healed me from masturbation, too. I have known myself to have sexual intercourse in the dream ever since I was a child,” she told the congregation.
She explained that appearing at the altar was both a testimony and an act of gratitude, despite initial fears about public perception. “The devil tried to tell me that I was supposed to protect my image. But I told myself, what image? The God that gave me the image is the same God that can take it away,” she said.
Dikeh also described a turning point following the Ghana Prayer Conference, where she experienced freedom from what she called years of spiritual oppression. She spoke candidly about struggling with “demonic anger” that had negatively affected her personal and professional life, adding that prayer brought her lasting peace for the first time in her 40 years.
The actress encouraged parents to be mindful of the habits they model for their children, noting how her father’s smoking influenced her own. She shared that after seeking divine help, she no longer experiences cravings for cigarettes or alcohol, describing her body as actively rejecting them.
Pastor Eze prayed for Dikeh during the service, declaring her freedom from sin and affirming her influence as “a voice in her generation.” The actress later shared photos from the church on Instagram, calling herself “a living testimony of mercy. One God spared, restored, and commissioned.” In recent months, Dikeh has been vocal about her renewed Christian faith, highlighting a life marked by peace, restoration, and devotion to serving God.
