“I Might Have Done Things I Shouldn’t Have” – Oshiomhole Seeks Forgiveness from Igbinedion

Former Edo State Governor and current Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has publicly sought forgiveness from the Esama of Benin, Sir Gabriel Igbinedion, for any past grievances that may have arisen during his tenure as governor.

Oshiomhole made the apology during a goodwill message at the banquet marking Igbinedion’s 90th birthday in Benin City. In his speech, the senator praised Igbinedion as a “good father” and lauded his extensive contributions to Nigerian society.

Addressing the gathering, Oshiomhole expressed his gratitude for Igbinedion’s support during his political rise. “I want to publicly acknowledge your support for me in 2007 and 2008, without which I might never have become the governor of Edo State,” he said.

Reflecting on his time as governor, Oshiomhole sought to make amends, saying, “As a Catholic, I want to confess that I might have done some things I shouldn’t have done as governor. At 90, it is only right that I ask for your forgiveness for any of my actions that may have irritated you.”

In a moment of light-hearted reflection, Oshiomhole compared Igbinedion’s influence and large following to that of a parent with many children, noting that some might inevitably cause frustration. “With as many children as God has blessed you with, some are bound to irritate you. Even me, with six children, sometimes wonder why they do things I don’t approve of,” he quipped.

Oshiomhole concluded by expressing his hope for reconciliation with the Igbinedion family, specifically referencing Igbinedion’s son, Lucky Igbinedion, who also served as Edo State governor. He also commended Igbinedion’s pioneering efforts in establishing Nigeria’s first private university and other ventures that have garnered international recognition.

The Esama’s 90th birthday celebration brought together political, religious, and business leaders from across Nigeria, reflecting Igbinedion’s broad influence and legacy.
