“I Did Not Inherit Any Money from My Father, I Built Everything from Scratch” – Dangote
Billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote has said he did not inherit wealth from his late father, stressing that his fortune was built from scratch. In a recent video, the industrialist explained that although he was born into a privileged family, he chose to chart his own path by establishing his businesses independently.
Dangote recalled working briefly with his uncle before moving to Lagos, where he began trading in cement. He said his decision to focus on cement was driven by Nigeria’s massive infrastructure gap and housing deficit, which created huge demand for the product. What started as a modest trading venture later expanded into full-scale cement production, eventually transforming into one of Africa’s largest industrial empires.
Speaking about his family background, he acknowledged his lineage of wealth, noting that his great-grandfather was the richest man in West Africa in the 1940s and his grandfather was also among Nigeria’s wealthiest. However, Dangote said he is proud to be self-made, revealing that any assets he inherited from his father were donated to charity.
“I did not inherit any money from my father. I built everything from scratch to where I am. Whatever I inherited in assets, I gave away to charity,” Dangote stated.
Today, Dangote is celebrated as Africa’s richest man, with his conglomerate spanning cement, sugar, salt, and fertilizer production across multiple countries.
