“I Asked Armed Robbers to Steal My Boyfriend’s Gold” — Delta Woman Confesses
A 24-year-old woman, Jessica Anthony, has admitted to arranging an armed robbery against her boyfriend in a bid to steal his gold items, the Delta State Police Command has said.
Jessica and her friend, identified as Ada, are currently in police custody in Asaba following their arrest over the incident.
According to Jessica, she contacted individuals she believed to be armed robbers and asked them to steal gold belonging to her boyfriend. She said the items were to be sold, with the proceeds handed over to her.
“I asked them to go and collect his gold. They were to sell it and give me the money,” she told investigators.
Jessica explained that she acted out of financial pressure, claiming she needed money to settle her sister’s bills. She also admitted that she would have felt hurt if her boyfriend had done the same to her.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed details of the case while parading the suspects. He said Jessica and the victim had previously dated, broke up, and later reconciled in December 2025.
Edafe said Jessica, working with her friend, went to a known crime-prone area in Warri in search of criminals to carry out the robbery.
“She pleaded with them to help her rob someone close to her,” Edafe said. “It is not clear whether she told them the person was her boyfriend.”
Unknown to Jessica, the person she approached was a community leader who collaborates with the police to identify and eliminate criminal activity. Edafe said the group requested a photograph of the intended victim and immediately recognized him.
“They contacted the man and informed him that someone had approached them to rob him,” Edafe said. “He agreed to cooperate with them to expose the plan.”
As part of the arrangement, Jessica was told that ₦65,000 was needed to procure tools for the operation. Police said she transferred ₦50,000 through a Point of Sale operator and added ₦15,000 in cash.
Edafe further stated that Jessica later led the supposed robbers to her boyfriend’s residence and pointed out his house. On their return from the estate, the boyfriend alerted estate security, leading to the arrest of all those involved.
During questioning, the boyfriend told police that one of his gold bracelets was valued at ₦4.2 million, while another gold item was worth ₦8.9 million.
“I feel heartbroken because I never expected this from her,” he was quoted as saying.
Police said investigations are ongoing.
