Hunger Protest: Senate President Akpabio Summons Emergency Session for Wednesday
The Senate has announced an emergency session to address the forthcoming nationwide protest planned for August 1, 2024. This decision, communicated via a brief notice to all senators on Monday morning, calls for a plenary session on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at 12 noon.
The notice from the Senate Clerk, issued on behalf of Senate President Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, stated: “An internal memorandum has been issued regarding the matter: Dear Distinguished Senators, the President of the Senate, His Excellency, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, has directed that an emergency plenary sitting of the Senate be convened as follows:
Date: WEDNESDAY, JULY 31st, 2024
TIME: 12 NOON.
Distinguished Senators are requested to make all necessary arrangements to attend as issues of national importance will be discussed. We regret any inconvenience caused by this interruption of the recess,” the notice added.
The emergency session comes as the Nigerian National Assembly, which includes both the Senate and the House of Representatives, shortens its annual recess. The assembly, originally scheduled to reconvene on September 17, is now addressing urgent issues related to the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests.
