Human Rights Radio Shuts Down Airwaves in Protest Over Detention of Minors
Human Rights Radio, a prominent station based in Abuja, has ceased broadcasting in a stand of protest against the arrest and detention of minors involved in the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.
Ahmed Isah, the owner of Human Rights Radio and host of its flagship program Berekete Family, made the announcement during Monday’s broadcast. Isah, known for his advocacy work through his show, did not appear in the studio that morning, explaining his absence as a reaction to the “shock and distress” he felt upon learning about the treatment of the detained children.
The minors, reportedly arrested during the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations, were arraigned last Friday, sparking outrage among activists and supporters. Describing the incident as deeply disturbing, Isah expressed his anger and dismay in a phone call that aired live around 8:20 AM, where he directed the station to suspend its broadcasts immediately in protest.
