How Yahoo Boy Allegedly Buried Mother Alive in Quest for Wealth — EFCC
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has condemned the actions of a young man seen in a viral video allegedly burying his mother alive as part of a money-making ritual. Acting Zonal Director of the Makurdi Directorate, Effa Imo Okim, voiced the Commission’s alarm during a courtesy visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Benue State.
The NUJ chairman, Bemdoo Ugber, had raised concern that the agency seemed to be paying less attention to corrupt public officials while intensifying its pursuit of internet fraudsters. Okim rejected that claim, insisting the Commission has not abandoned its mandate but has been compelled to clamp down on cybercrime rings whose activities, he said, have taken a deadly turn.
He explained that some fraudsters now resort to ritual practices, seeking supernatural powers to boost their criminal schemes. According to him, this desperation increasingly endangers family members, as ritualists often demand sacrifices targeting parents.
Okim referenced a disturbing video that recently circulated online, showing a student who allegedly joined a criminal group shortly after gaining admission into a higher institution. He said the group introduced the boy to ritualists, who instructed him to bury his mother alive as a condition for promised wealth. The young man reportedly returned home during a school break, dug a grave, attacked his unsuspecting mother, tied her up, and buried her, all in a bid to fulfil the ritual demands.
The EFCC director urged parents to pay close attention to sudden behavioural changes in their children, warning that the rising trend of ritual-linked cybercrime poses a serious threat to society. He added that the Commission is intensifying efforts to curb the growing menace and restore public safety.
