How UI medical student died after alleged insecticide ingestion

A 300-level medical student of the University of Ibadan has died after allegedly ingesting an insecticide.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening at Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall on the university campus. The student, whose identity has not been disclosed, was found on the ground floor of the hostel by another undergraduate. He was reportedly foaming at the mouth and appeared disoriented.

Sources said the student acknowledged taking an insecticide known as Sniper before he lost consciousness.

Roommates alerted hall authorities, who arranged for his transfer to Jaja Clinic through the Students’ Union bus service. He was stabilised with oxygen and intravenous fluids before being moved to the emergency unit of the University College Hospital, where he was placed on life support.

The Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Funmi Adetuyibi, confirmed the development.

“The boy passed away on Sunday evening,” she said. “The student was brought in based on the report that he consumed Sniper, and the hospital responded accordingly. Sadly, he did not survive.”

The student’s parents, who live in Akure, Ondo State, were contacted and arrived at the hospital before his death. While they reportedly raised concerns about possible poisoning, his roommates maintained that he had admitted to taking the substance.

Peers also said the student had recently withdrawn from social activities, missed lectures and avoided calls from his parents.
