How a ₦30,000 Car Race Bet Ended in a Crash That Killed Five in Ogun

A street car race over a ₦30,000 wager has ended in tragedy, leaving five people dead in Ipara, Remo, Ogun State.

The contest, reportedly organised by three suspected internet fraudsters, turned fatal around 1:40 p.m. on Monday when the driver of an unregistered Lexus lost control at high speed. The car veered off the road and smashed into a roadside shop, killing two residents — identified as Akeem Ashiru and Shina Badejo — instantly.

According to witnesses, the driver and two passengers in the vehicle were trapped in the wreckage and rushed to separate hospitals, where they later died from their injuries.

Videos shared on social media show the wrecked car embedded in the collapsed shop wall, with victims lying motionless nearby as onlookers cried out in shock.

Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi confirmed the incident, saying the driver died on the spot while the passengers succumbed to their injuries in hospital.

“The vehicle was heading towards Fidiwo when the driver, at high speed, lost control and rammed into the victims by the roadside,” Akinbiyi said.

The incident has reignited concerns about illegal street racing and reckless driving in the state.
