“How 42 Nigerians Were Beaten, Robbed, Arrested Without Any Allegations in Mozambique” — NIDCOM
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has condemned the arrest and alleged assault of 42 Nigerian nationals in Mozambique, saying they were detained without any allegations.
In a statement released on Sunday by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols at the commission, NIDCOM chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa said the Nigerians were reportedly singled out for arrest at a spare-parts market.
According to the commission, the individuals were picked from among traders and others present at the market despite no explanation from authorities.
NIDCOM said reports indicate that the Nigerians were beaten during the arrest and had their personal belongings taken. Some of them are also said to have fallen ill and require medical attention.
Dabiri-Erewa described the development as disturbing and called for the immediate and unconditional release of the detainees.
She added that the affected Nigerians have been confirmed to be legal residents in Mozambique. The commission also noted that the country’s attorney-general is reportedly unaware of any charges filed against them.
The NIDCOM chairman said that if any of the detainees violated the law, Mozambican authorities should follow due legal procedures and charge them in court. She urged the authorities to release the Nigerians or formally prosecute them in accordance with the law.
