House of Representatives Push for Monthly Rent Payments in Abuja

In a bid to address the escalating housing crisis in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the House of Representatives has taken decisive steps towards implementing monthly rent payments. This move aims to ease the financial burden on residents and regulate the activities of landlords in Abuja.

The resolution emerged following a motion of urgent public importance presented by Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo, highlighting the exorbitant cost of rent in the FCT. Ukpong-Udo emphasized the inability of many civil servants to afford accommodation within the capital city.

Advocating for monthly rent payments, Ukpong-Udo underscored the benefits it offers tenants, including enhanced financial management, flexibility, and stability. He urged the government to intervene by formulating policies to regulate house rents and landlord activities in Abuja.

Furthermore, the House mandated the Federal Ministries of Housing, Habitat, and Works to embark on the construction of affordable, low-cost housing estates tailored to accommodate civil servants. This initiative seeks to alleviate the housing challenges faced by government employees in the FCT.

In tandem with these efforts, the Committee on FCT has been tasked with ensuring the implementation and enforcement of the resolution. By collaborating with stakeholders in the real estate sector, the House aims to foster a conducive housing environment that prioritizes the welfare of residents while curbing arbitrary rent hikes.
