Home Office Announces New English Test Requirements for UK Visa Applicants

The UK Home Office has introduced new English language test requirements for visa applicants, replacing the previous LANGUAGECERT ESOL SELT 4-skills test with two new assessments: the LANGUAGECERT Academic SELT and the LANGUAGECERT General SELT. These changes, already in effect since January 1, 2025, are aimed at better aligning language testing with applicants’ specific immigration routes.

The updated Academic SELT is now required for those applying for student visas or seeking admission to UK higher education institutions. It features tasks and content focused on academic settings, assessing candidates’ ability to meet the language demands of university-level study.

In contrast, the General SELT caters to work visa applicants, including skilled worker and health and care worker routes. It emphasizes practical, real-life English usage in everyday and professional scenarios. While both tests continue to evaluate the four key skills—reading, writing, speaking, and listening—they are tailored to suit different visa pathways.

The Home Office confirmed that existing results from the now-retired test remain valid for two years, and vouchers issued for the previous version can be used within 12 months.

For visa routes such as health and care worker, high-potential individual, innovator founder, minister of religion, scale-up worker, skilled worker, start-up, student, and certain temporary work categories, a test covering all four language skills is required.

Applicants in categories including citizenship, international sportsperson, parent, partner, representative of an overseas business, and settlement must only demonstrate speaking and listening abilities.

SELTs must be taken through approved providers. Within the UK, these include Pearson, Trinity College London, IELTS SELT Consortium, and LANGUAGECERT. For applicants outside the UK, approved providers are Pearson, PSI Services (UK) Ltd. – Skills for English (UKVI), IELTS SELT Consortium, and LANGUAGECERT.
