History Made as Prof. Ortuanya Becomes UNN’s First Nsukka-born Vice Chancellor

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has announced the appointment of Professor Simon Ortuanya, a professor of law and former Secretary to the Enugu State Government, as its 16th Vice Chancellor. Ortuanya emerged as the top candidate in a competitive selection process that included 25 other contenders. His appointment was confirmed by the university’s Governing Council during a meeting held in Enugu on Sunday.

According to Kayode Ojo, Chairman of the Governing Council and Pro-Chancellor of the university, the selection process was both transparent and rigorous. He noted that the process began under the previous council and was thoroughly reviewed by the current one, involving an extensive evaluation of candidates’ credentials and in-depth interviews. Ojo said the council sought a candidate who not only possesses strong academic credentials but also has the leadership skills and external networks to elevate the institution’s standing.

Ortuanya, in his acceptance speech, expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah for their roles in facilitating the appointment. He also commended the council for its commitment and diligence. He pledged to serve the university with integrity, energy, and vision, promising to restore UNN’s legacy and inspire a renewed era of growth and academic excellence. He extended a hand of fellowship to fellow candidates, calling for unity in rebuilding the university.

The university management, in a statement signed by Acting Public Relations Officer Inya Agha Egwu, congratulated Ortuanya, highlighting his vast academic and administrative experience. The statement emphasized his deep understanding of university governance and policy, noting that his leadership is expected to guide UNN through a transformative five-year term focused on academic excellence.

Ortuanya, who hails from Aku in Igboetiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, becomes the first indigenous vice chancellor from Nsukka, the university’s host town, in its 65-year history. He has previously served as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, and as a Professor of Law at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT). He is also a visiting scholar at Loyola University Chicago School of Law. His prior public service includes roles as Commissioner for Education under Governor Sullivan Chime, Secretary to the State Government under Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and Director General of the South-East Governors’ Forum.
