Heartbreak for Mariah Carey as She Loses Mother and Sister on Same Day
Mariah Carey has announced the passing of both her mother, Patricia Carey, and her sister, Alison Carey, on the same day over the weekend. The iconic singer shared the tragic news in a statement released on Monday, expressing her profound grief.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” Carey said in the statement. The Grammy-winning artist had spent time with her mother in the week leading up to her death and has requested privacy as she navigates this difficult period. No details regarding the causes of their deaths have been disclosed.
Patricia Carey, 87, was a former opera singer and vocal coach of Irish-American descent. Mariah Carey had previously opened up about her complex relationship with her mother in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. She revealed that while there was love, their relationship was strained by professional jealousy. Despite these challenges, Carey’s memoir included a heartfelt dedication to her mother, stating, “To Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”
Carey’s relationship with her older sister, Alison, 63, was similarly troubled. The singer disclosed in her memoir that she had distanced herself from both Alison and their brother Morgan, citing emotional and physical safety concerns. Alison later sued Carey for $1.2 million, claiming the memoir caused her “immense emotional distress.”
The family had previously lost their father, Alfred Carey, in 2002 after his battle with cancer.
Mariah Carey, who continues to be one of the most successful and celebrated artists in the music industry, is now grieving the loss of two close family members in what she has described as an unimaginably difficult time.
