Head-on Collision Kills 14 in Jigawa, 4 Critically Injured
The Jigawa Police Command has confirmed a tragic accident that claimed the lives of 14 passengers and left four others injured near Kanya Market on Tuesday. The incident involved a head-on collision between a Daf truck and a Toyota Hiace bus.
In a statement to the press, DSP Lawan Adam, the Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa Police Command, provided details of the accident. According to the statement, the collision occurred at around 11:20 AM when a Daf truck (registration number GMB 242 KD) and an overloaded Toyota Hiace bus (registration number XA 381 GAS) attempted to navigate through an Immigration checkpoint.
“The Toyota Hiace, coming from Kano, was traveling at high speed and failed to stop at the checkpoint,” the statement explained. “In an attempt to bypass the checkpoint, the driver veered into the opposite lane, leading to a head-on collision with the Daf truck.”
The immediate aftermath was devastating, with 14 passengers declared dead on the spot and four others sustaining severe injuries. The police and emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene, evacuating the victims to Kanya Babba Cottage Hospital. Medical personnel confirmed the deaths and are currently providing care to the injured.
An investigation into the incident has been initiated by the police.
