Head of Demolition Galadima Retires After Three Decades in FCT Service
Tpl Mukhtar Galadima, Director of the Federal Capital Territory’s Department of Development Control and the figure long associated with enforcement against illegal structures in Abuja, has concluded his public service career after more than three decades in the FCT system.
Galadima described his exit as a moment of gratitude and fulfilment, reflecting on a journey shaped by commitment to the Abuja Master Plan and the principles of public service. He joined the FCT Administration in December 1992 as a young Higher Technical Officer, noting that rising to the rank of director was never part of his early expectations. He credited steady dedication, guidance from mentors and a strong sense of duty for his progression through the ranks.
Looking back on his tenure, he said many of the department’s reforms succeeded because staff participated actively in shaping them. He highlighted the digitization of building approvals, the introduction of post-development audits and the decentralization of operational offices as achievements made possible through teamwork. According to him, the department has largely digitized its approval process and is preparing to introduce electronic vetting, a system that will allow both staff and developers to work from any location.
Galadima noted that these changes are aimed at shortening approval timelines, improving monitoring and ensuring developments remain consistent with the Abuja Master Plan. Addressing the challenge of balancing rapid urban expansion with regulatory compliance, he said public awareness remains vital. Residents, he explained, often alert officials to illegal developments, while staff conduct regular citywide monitoring to keep enforcement aligned with growth.
He emphasized that engaging stakeholders creates a shared sense of responsibility and strengthens sustainable urban development. As he steps away from service, Galadima expressed optimism that upcoming officers will continue to safeguard the Abuja Master Plan with the same dedication that guided his career.
