Gunmen Invade Teaching Hospital, Kill Physiotherapist in Suspected Cult Attack
Panic gripped the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) on Friday when gunmen stormed the facility and fatally shot a physiotherapist identified simply as Alex. The assailants, suspected to be cultists, targeted the victim while he was on duty at the hospital’s physiotherapy department.
Witnesses described scenes of chaos as patients and staff fled for safety during the attack. In the aftermath, hospital workers staged a protest within the premises, holding placards to condemn the rising insecurity now encroaching on health institutions.
UBTH spokesperson Joshua Uwaila confirmed the incident, stating that security agencies had been notified and an investigation was underway.
Tragedy also struck on Tuesday near the University of Benin main gate, when an articulated truck crushed two vigilante members to death along the Ugbowo-Lagos Road. Eyewitnesses said the victims were riding a motorbike when they were run over around noon, with the impact reportedly mangling their bodies beyond recognition. Their remains have been deposited in a mortuary.
Efforts to reach Edo State Police spokesperson Moses Yamu for comment were unsuccessful.
