Gunmen in Army Camouflage Kill Soldier, Driver in Abia Construction Site Attack

Tragedy struck in Abia State over the weekend as gunmen disguised in military uniforms launched a deadly assault on a construction site in Nunya, Isuikwuato Local Government Area, killing a Nigerian soldier and a driver employed by a Chinese engineering company.

The attack occurred on Saturday evening, July 12, 2025. According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants—numbering about six—arrived on three motorcycles, dressed in army camouflage and armed with assault rifles. Upon storming the site, they opened fire indiscriminately, fatally shooting one of the drivers and a soldier assigned to protect the site.

Sources indicate that the attackers may be linked to a notorious kidnapping gang operating across state borders. One of the gunmen, alleged to have military training, is believed to have led the operation and is currently on the run.

The attackers reportedly stole the slain soldier’s rifle before fleeing the scene. Security forces launched a swift response, recovering several spent AK-47 cartridges and evacuating the victims’ remains to a local hospital.

Acting on intelligence, authorities arrested a suspect with possible ties to the incident at a hideout in Umuahia North LGA. He is currently in custody and undergoing interrogation as investigations continue.

As of the time of this report, the Abia State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement. Multiple attempts to reach Police Public Relations Officer DSP Maureen Chinaka for comment were unsuccessful.
