Guinea Seeks Review of 1976 AFCON Title Following CAF’s Senegal Ruling Over Walkout Sanction
The Guinea Football Federation has formally asked the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to review the outcome of the 1976 African Cup of Nations, citing what it describes as inconsistencies in how match abandonments are handled.
The request follows CAF’s recent decision to overturn the 2025 AFCON result, in which Senegal were sanctioned for a walkout and stripped of the title despite initially winning on the pitch. CAF later awarded the championship to Morocco.
Guinea argues that similar disciplinary standards should be applied retrospectively to earlier competitions. The federation pointed to the 1976 tournament, also hosted by Morocco, as a case that warrants reassessment.
The decisive stage of that edition followed a four-team round-robin format. In the final phase, Morocco needed only a draw to secure the title, while Guinea required a win. Guinea took the lead in the 33rd minute through Chérif Souleymane.
During the match, Moroccan players briefly left the pitch in protest over a refereeing decision before returning to continue play. Morocco later equalised in the 86th minute through Ahmed Makrouh, and the match ended 1–1. Morocco finished top of the group with five points, while Guinea placed second.
Guinea’s federation maintains that the circumstances mirror modern cases where walkouts have led to sanctions, and has urged CAF to reconsider the historical result using current disciplinary principles. It stated that it is seeking recognition of the 1976 title.
CAF has not issued a public response to the request. Analysts note that regulations cited in recent rulings were not in effect in 1976 and are not typically applied retroactively, raising questions about whether historical outcomes can be reopened under current governance frameworks.
The appeal places renewed attention on CAF’s handling of precedent and whether decisions made under earlier competition rules can be reassessed in light of contemporary standards.
