Gridlock: Consider Returning to Your State of Origin Instead of Attacking Lagos Over Traffic – Reno Omokri Tells Suffering Lagosians
Former Presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has addressed the growing frustration among Lagosians over the traffic congestion caused by the closure of the Independence Bridge. In a recent Instagram post, Omokri urged those blaming the Lagos state government for the gridlock to reconsider their stance and, instead, reflect on the larger picture.
He pointed out that Lagos, which covers just 3,345 square kilometers, is home to 11% of Nigeria’s population. This makes it one of the most densely populated areas globally. In comparison, Niger State, which spans 76,363 square kilometers, is far larger but has only a quarter of the population of Lagos.
Omokri emphasized that due to the limited space in Lagos, the government faces significant challenges when it comes to maintaining infrastructure, particularly roads. He noted that despite these constraints, people continue to flock to Lagos, with night buses bringing an estimated 6,000 people into the city daily. Many of these individuals, he argued, seek better living conditions than what their home states can provide. When they don’t receive the level of service they expect, they resort to online criticisms of the state government.
While acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the traffic, Omokri made it clear that such disruptions are a necessary byproduct of road repairs in a densely populated state. He encouraged Lagosians to appreciate the efforts made by the Lagos State Government, especially the introduction of the Blue and Red Line trains, which offer an alternative to road transport. He contrasted Lagos’ development with that of other states, pointing out that many states have little infrastructure, with some even celebrating their first bus stop.
In conclusion, Omokri suggested that rather than continuing to attack the Lagos State Government, those dissatisfied with the situation might consider returning to their home states. He further advised that if returning is not an option because of the advantages Lagos offers, residents should endure the temporary inconvenience.
