Global Impact: $20 Billion Dangote Refinery Set to Import Crude from the United States
The $20 billion Dangote Refinery has finalized arrangements to import crude oil from the United States, signaling a significant departure from its reliance on Nigerian sources.
Traders familiar with the matter have disclosed that Trafigura Group recently sold two million barrels of WTI Midland to the Dangote Refinery, with delivery expected by the end of February 2024. This marks a historic shift for the refinery, which has traditionally sourced crude domestically.
According to reports from Bloomberg, the decision to purchase non-Nigerian crude reflects the changing dynamics in the global oil market, as the exponential growth in US oil supply over the past decade reshapes trade patterns, extending its influence even to regions like Asia.
The Dangote Refinery, boasting a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, commenced operations earlier this month. Initially targeting a processing rate of 350,000 barrels per day, the refinery aims to gradually increase production toward its full capacity.
While the refinery primarily relies on domestic crude through a supply agreement with the trading arm of the state-owned NNPCL, recent developments have seen a diversification of its crude sources. The facility received its first shipment of Nigeria’s Agbami crude, facilitated by a trading unit of Shell, with subsequent deliveries including Nigeria’s Amenam, Bonny Light, and CJ Blend streams.
Notably, the refinery had previously received six million barrels of crude supplied by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), a significant milestone in its journey towards full-scale production. The latest import of two million barrels of WTI Midland from the United States marks a new chapter in Dangote Refinery’s global sourcing strategy.
The Managing Director of Dangote Ports Operations, Mr. Akin Omole, had earlier indicated that the refinery would be ready to commence operations once the scheduled six million barrels of crude had been successfully delivered. This move positions the Dangote Refinery as a key player in the evolving landscape of global oil trade.
