FULL LIST: US Withdraws from 66 International Organisations Under Trump Administration Review
The United States has formally announced its withdrawal from 66 international organisations, following a review by the Trump Administration assessing the effectiveness and alignment of these bodies with US interests.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the decision was guided by Executive Order 14199, signed by President Donald Trump, which mandates the review of international institutions deemed wasteful, ineffective, or harmful to national interests.
“Today, the United States will be withdrawing from 66 organisations identified as part of the administration’s assessment of international institutions that no longer serve the country’s interests,” Rubio stated on January 7, 2026. He added that the review of additional organisations is ongoing.
According to Rubio, the administration determined that the affected bodies were redundant, mismanaged, or otherwise acting contrary to US sovereignty and priorities. He said the move signals a shift in the US approach to international engagement.
“President Trump is clear: the United States will no longer expend taxpayer resources or diplomatic influence on institutions that do not advance our national interests,” Rubio said. “We will cooperate where it benefits our people and disengage where it does not.”
The administration also criticized the broader global institutional system, describing it as increasingly driven by agendas unrelated to practical cooperation or US priorities. Rubio highlighted concerns including diversity mandates, gender equity initiatives, and climate policies promoted by these organisations, which he said often limit American independence.
Rubio emphasized that US participation in these organisations will end, with funding and diplomatic support withdrawn. “We will not continue to lend legitimacy or resources to institutions that conflict with or are irrelevant to our national priorities,” he said.
The US government released a full list of the 66 organisations affected, covering both non-UN and UN-affiliated bodies. Non-UN organisations include the International Renewable Energy Agency, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Global Counterterrorism Forum, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature. UN-affiliated organisations affected include the UN Population Fund, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, UN Democracy Fund, and several regional ECOSOC commissions.
The administration described the withdrawals as part of a broader effort to align US engagement with national interests, prioritising practical cooperation over ideological or procedural obligations in global governance.
