FULL LIST: NAFDAC Delists 101 Medicines, Including Flagyl and Artemether-Lumefantrine
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced the delisting of 101 medicines and health products from the Nigerian market.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the agency said the affected products are no longer authorised for manufacturing, importation, exportation, distribution, advertisement, sale, or use in the country. The move followed either requests by market authorisation holders to withdraw certain products or regulatory actions taken by the agency through suspension or cancellation of licences.
NAFDAC explained that a suspension applies when the conditions under which a product’s licence was issued are no longer met, while a cancellation occurs when the agency revokes a product’s licence outright. A withdrawal happens when a company voluntarily discontinues its product’s registration.
Some widely used medicines were included in the delisting, such as Flagyl suspension and tablets, commonly used for diarrhoea and infections; Artemether/Lumefantrine, a frontline antimalarial; Penicillin G Sodium Sandoz powder, prescribed for bacterial infections; Januvia and Janumet, used for diabetes management; Norditropin, a growth hormone injectable; Cryomarex Rispens HVT vaccine; and Elisca eye drops.
“This is to inform the General Public that the following products are approved for withdrawal, suspension and cancellation by NAFDAC,” the statement read. “They are therefore no longer permitted for manufacture, importation, exportation, distribution, advertisement, sale and use within Nigeria.”
The agency urged healthcare professionals and the public to take note of the changes, stressing that delisted products should not be prescribed, sold, or purchased going forward.
