FRSC to Prosecute TikTok Star Peller for Reckless Driving
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced that it will prosecute popular TikTok influencer Habeeb Hamzat, also known as Peller, for alleged reckless and distracted driving. The move comes after a video showing Peller live streaming while behind the wheel went viral, an action the FRSC says contributed to a road traffic crash.
In a statement, Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer Olusegun Ogungbemide said the Corps Marshal expressed serious concern over a rising trend of celebrities and content creators disregarding traffic laws in the pursuit of online attention. He emphasized that live streaming, recording, or any content creation while driving violates traffic regulations and endangers both drivers and other road users.
The Lagos State Sector Commander has been directed to commence prosecution of Peller for reckless driving, using a phone while driving, and distracted driving under existing traffic laws. The FRSC stressed that fame does not exempt anyone from the law, and dangerous behavior on public roads cannot be tolerated.
The Corps Marshal urged entertainment associations, actors’ guilds, influencer networks, and content creator communities to encourage responsible conduct among their members. He highlighted the influence celebrities have on young Nigerians and called for them to model safe road behavior rather than recklessness.
The FRSC reiterated that it will enforce traffic laws strictly, regardless of an individual’s social media status, warning that no online content or momentary popularity is worth risking human lives.
