From Workouts to Hookups: Lagos Gyms Face Identity Crisis

Gyms across Lagos are drawing attention for more than just fitness these days, as several gym-goers express frustration over what they see as a growing trend of romantic encounters and socialising at fitness centres.

In separate conversations with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), regular users lamented that many fitness enthusiasts now appear more interested in mingling, flaunting appearances, and creating content for social media than in actually working out.

Folarin Adekoya, who frequents a gym in Ikeja, noted that the atmosphere has become more distracting in recent times. “Some women wear revealing and provocative outfits, which raises questions about their true purpose for being at the gym,” he said. “It’s not just the clothing—it’s the entire behaviour. People use gyms now as a place to meet romantic partners. I’ve seen it happen.”

Jason Onwuka, another gym user based in Festac, shared a similar view, saying that social media influencers and casual visitors often turn the gym into a meeting point rather than a training ground. “They spend hours chatting and laughing—it’s clearly not about fitness anymore,” he said. He acknowledged, however, that while the environment may be changing, personal discipline remains key. “There will always be distractions. If you go to the gym with a clear goal, it’s up to you not to lose focus.”

He also observed that female fitness professionals typically dress more practically in leggings and tights and maintain focus on their routines.

This trend has not gone unnoticed by public figures. Recently, reality TV personality and former Big Brother Naija housemate Teddy A publicly criticised what he described as indecent dressing among female gym-goers. “I’m not being insensitive, but we don’t want gyms to start banning girls over dressing,” he said. His comments triggered a lively debate online, with opinions divided over whether gym dress codes should be enforced more strictly.

At some fitness centres, efforts are already underway to address these concerns. A gym manager in Ajah told NAN that rules have been introduced to curb inappropriate clothing and behaviour. “We want all members to feel welcome and respected,” the manager said. “But despite our efforts, the trend continues. As long as it doesn’t disturb others, some members feel it’s harmless to socialise while here.”

As gyms evolve into spaces that blend fitness with social interaction, many long-time users hope the focus on physical health doesn’t get lost in the mix.
