From Truck Conductor in Canada to Government Communicator: The Inspiring Journey of Nigeria’s Kwunkeyi Isichei

Kwunkeyi Isichei, a Nigerian now living in Canada, is drawing attention online for his remarkable journey from taking on entry-level jobs to holding a key role in the Canadian government. In a widely shared TikTok video, Isichei recounted the path that led him to become the Digital Communications Advisor to Canada’s Minister of Families, Children, and Social Development.

Arriving in Canada in 2021, Isichei began his new life working at McDonald’s while DJing at Nigerian community events to help cover his bills. He admitted that while DJing paid well, it left him feeling unfulfilled due to what he described as “ungrateful” clients. Seeking better opportunities, he transitioned into a series of physically demanding roles—from warehouse agent to truck conductor.

“The warehouse job was the worst—long hours of standing, no phones, just boxes,” he said, explaining that he quit after three months. As a truck conductor, he enjoyed traveling and seeing different parts of Canada, but quit after two weeks due to conflicts on the job.

His next move took him to Montreal’s airport, where he worked as a ramp agent loading baggage onto planes. He quickly advanced to the position of plane marshaller, proudly recalling, “I used to land and park big planes at the Montreal airport.”

Isichei’s turning point came when he broke into the media industry as a TV reporter, describing it as a “dream come true.” Yet, his journey didn’t stop there. A surprise call from the Canadian federal government led to a position as lead photographer for one of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s ministers. Today, he serves in the same capacity for the Minister of Families, Children, and Social Development, Mark Carney’s appointee.

On LinkedIn, Isichei described his current role as the creative lead behind the Minister’s digital communications. His responsibilities include writing, shooting, and editing video content, as well as producing high-quality photography that captures the Minister’s activities nationwide.

His story, filled with persistence and adaptability, continues to resonate with many, offering a powerful example of resilience and growth in a new country.
